In Figure la, a centralized structure based on Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVCs) is sufficient to satisfy the needs of the net- work. As more applications are added, however, Switched Virtual Circuits (SVCs) help provide the additional flexibility needed to meet these requirements (Figure 1b).
